Brain“You are so cute,” “I like your outfit,” “You have beautiful and tantalizing eyes…” Hearing these compliments especially from people you do not know are truly gratifying as if you hit the jackpot in a slot machine. Neurologically, hearing compliments is the same as winning money according to EurekAlert. A research group in Japan conducted an experiment on 19 people with monetary and social rewards. The acquisition of one’s good reputation robustly activated reward-related brain areas, notably the striatum, and these overlapped with the areas activated by monetary rewards. These results strongly suggest that social reward is processed in the striatum like monetary reward. At this point, we can say that getting money is equal to hearing compliments. So next time you hear somebody telling you “You look good today,” just say “Thanks for the money!”
